OIL& TIME/ OLIO &TEMPO

RitaVaselli- Thinking  Beatrice-Oil graphite and china ink ,on canvas 16"x122"-in progress maybe

*****
Oil painting takes time and the way I feel painting, is a true sacrifice ... wait  drying means losing sight of what I was about to express.
There are many ways to paint with oils and  also means that restrict the drying times.
(If you have tips, dear friends, explain to me please)
I started trying to repeat the gestures that are usual in my watercolor, with spatula, prussian blue and safflower oil, then  I started waiting patiently.

Same gesture that in my watercolor for this first layer that revealed me some of Beatrice

Today finally my basic image is ready and since I love very much an Italian master of the art, Pietro Annigoni, I thought to inspire him to carry on the painting, with china and graphite.
My thoughts emerged day by day and as I looked at my sketch dry, I thought glimpse the face of Beatrice and her expression sometimes so touching ... a bit 'child, a little' angel, Beatrice at all.
Future of this oil work is yet to see.

  3. Really BEAUTIFUL Rita. You show a command of the different medias you used so sensitively here.
My memory is of a magnificent portrait by Pietro Annigoni of Queen Elizabeth when she was much younger. It was a jaw dropper and I saw it again in the national Portrait Gallery about 8 years ago and was still amazed at how fabulous it was. I hope I have the right artist in mind.

    1. Thanks dear Julie! Most valuable thing to do, for a painter is put its emotions in painting gestures. And try to keep it to the end.
It is not easy to come to this, so studying the masters and their examples is a good guide. Pietro Annigoni also made portraits with graphics, wonderful lithographs, where drawing and fluency merged harmoniously. Idea to use china ink for eyes comes from these portraits.

  7. When I saw the thumbnail, it reminded me of a Renaissance portrait.
I tried oils only a couple of times, but found that the long drying times do not agree with my temperament.. at least not yet
