ROOTS / RADICI

I painted these roses thinking my dad in his Birthday.

50 years later, looking at some   my early works,  I find  same colors  palette used for  a sketch done  yesterday to test a new paper ..

Our roots become distant, while we grow old, becoming roots for children and grandchildren .. My father was born in 1921 and today is his birthday.
Time to remember our walks together when I was a child, time to remember ... behind the doors seem to close forever our loved ones there are days that most strongly I want to remember, live, young, happy.

In Pavia  where I lived, in  old town, home was built in 1844 ... a large stone slab as  balcony .I love  shadow of the railing, Art Nouveau. These roses were blessed for Santa Rita, 22 May 2008 and gifted to me in my name day by a dear friend of Pavia.
So I painted a bunch of roses, preparing a drawing from a photo reference ... but during my process, everything changed.
I thank my father, he always encouraged my passion for books  and colors, putting myself in a position to be free to read, draw or paint what I wanted,
While drawing, painting and reading at school were planned from teachers, in my free time, I read and drew, according to my feeling.
Not much has changed since then, experimentation  and playfulness are an integral part of the way I keep my brushes in hand.

An acrylic on paper. These colors in 1967 seemed a rare thing and I wanted to try ... thanks,Dad! Acrylics, oils, pastels colored pencils, paper and books have always been close to me along with freedom to use as I wanted.
My days sometimes, as in this week, bring concerns and anxiety, that I dissolve in water with my colors. Painting is caring garden of my mind, where storms and hail, even if inevitable, are only few moment among many peaceful hours.
Shadows are there and there will always be, but I like look at the sunny side of things, before the night.

HEARTBEAT / BATTITO

Sunday morning coming out of a garden center, an image caught my attention.
Someone ripped covers adhesive of an empty shop.

This image caught my attention...
I thought at Mimmo Rotella, italian pop artist, and I stopped to take pictures.
Looking my photo later, shapes suggest me idea of a mother carrying a child in her arms with a robe ancient or with a spacesuit ... It happen every century, that a mother with a baby want to bring rescued ... from the bad weather which affect the world, such as typhoons and earthquakes or rescued from the violence that continues to plague the planet ...
This today came to life, with two hearts beating.

Arches 640 gr.
Mom Roses - RitaVaselli Watercolor, 22"x30" Arches 300 lbs
Ho cercato diversi approcci all'argomento così carico di simboli.

Mom Roses - RitaVaselli Watercolor - WIP2

I'm living among roses, since some weeks.
I worked hard on the computer to process my images and bring them closer to my way of see.
Between reality and interpretation, my computer gives me the opportunity to change atmospheres colors and try to understand the structure of these roses of the past.
Rose will be visible only in my imagination, helped by prints.I  tried different approaches to  subject so full of symbols.

The Universe seen by the Hubble telescope (Carina Nebula) inspired the background of roses, which I dedicated to my mother
In  my childhood garden , my father taught me to treat the roses and my mother devoted to the garden its hours, work-free.
One of my duties was to collect  roses too open to let bloom better other, or remove too many buds to help a beautiful bloom.
Roses were all special, but that I would have found out, only later, for me these roses were all nameless, but I was in love with their great beauty. Red or white, climbing or falling, scented ...
A trellis of white roses separating my garden from our neighbors.
These roses gave me to think ... they were nice but overnight  larger roses lost all the petals and I could never pick them up ... if it was raining, the rain seems to rage on these white petals than on any other.

Mom Roses, detail - RitaVaselli Watercolor
Even now my preference goes to Thea roses, little fragrant, but strong ... maybe gave me more satisfaction, as a child - gardener, resisting rain and wind ...It 'just a hybrid of Thea with bouquet of flowers by mixed colors for each branch that attracts my attention, even more , because this tree after the triumph of 2012 no longer gave a blooming so extraordinary.Every year, I observe it grow, across the street, where I live, ready to  pick new photos ... and every year I'm disappointed.
Each plant has a history intertwined with the climate but also with gardener life.
Roses are plants that I took care, when my mom and dad were my whole world.
Getting to express  their beauty and what it means for me, is a goal for which I'm working many hours that are always happy hours.

MINI GIRASOLI -RitaVaselli Watercolor e Derwent Graphite ExtraLarge

A true gift of fate it was last Saturday, a chance meeting with the extra large graphite stick Derwent.
Monday and tuesday I experimented combining these tools with large flat brushes that were a gift from my sponsor, my husband..
New brushes are a natural extension of my emotional state and follow shapes just like the extra large stick of Derwent.

These are sketches of half an hour between two morning coffee yesterday and today.
Nothing more beautiful than to start, so my day.
After sketching flowers , working at all other domestic activities I am happier!

BLACK POWER

The ink had a powerful role at the end! Detail of "Dahlias".

At my first lesson in watercolor, in 2000, teacher Maria Chiara Orlandini told me that black and white are not used in watercolor.
In the  suplies list, however, it was  black calligraphy  ink to draw and work on the tones, with wet tecniques.

crea textures interessanti.
Between different types of tube black, for its water reacting, I like Mars Black that, if even less flowing than ink, creates interesting textures.
Black ink has more "charme"  than black color  tube, it has a soul that goes easy for its liquid perfect liquid dilution.
I spent the past month to experimentation, looking for a content more mine, rather than creation of something that I was able to do, so I opened the bottle of ink more often.

Black Ink is very different from tube watercolors.  Something to try!
Inchiostro nero è davvero diverso da qualunque nero in tubetto ...qualcosa da provare!
Brushes and ink are suitable for  fast expression. No time to tell to my hand what to do ... my hand already does. Black ink has a true power that is worth using.

Black Mars cooler tones, compared to other blacks in tube, and Chinese ink, interesting to see how they are if close and how they are if alone.E' interessante vedere come stanno vicini e come stanno separati i diversi toni di nero e le differenti texture
The light gray tones that black takes with water are my favorites for value studies but also to express moods.
A small series of  similar brushstrokes, moistened with water produce very different effects with black Mars Winsor & Newton (right) and Ink for Chinese calligraphy (left)

Tulips from Solveig Rimstad - RitaVaselli Watercolor and Ink Sketch 20x28 inches

Today we have many friends who are part of our daily lives, without ever having met them really.
Dialogue combined with photos of artwork, personal photos and those of environment where virtual friends live, it makes all more real and closer.

Martine Alison Picture
This process is even really visible with friends on Facebook present well on Blogger.
Real-time chat, comments with rapid interactive response, on time, it helps to make virtual friends more and more present in our lives.
Rarely happens to meet a neighbor, while the rich  exchange of experiences of life and painting with friends who live far is daily.
On Tuesday, something happened that made me clear how these virtual friendships can give results that were unthinkable a short time ago,
I came home after a walk and I found on my Facebook a floral tribute to Martine Alison, quince flowers photographed in macro mode and three beautiful tulips photographed from  Solveig Rimstad.
Solveig says she will paint these flowers and invites those who want, to do the same.
For someone like me who takes time to work on pictures after so many prints, corrections etc ...it was a small epiphany. Friends flowers had given a signal to start ....
Three hours later, quince flowers and tulips were already made as big sketches on cardboard...painted freely and joyful.

Quince flowers - RitaVaselli Watercolor Sketch, 20x28 inches on Fabriano Murillo
At late afternoon I was able to thank my friends with pictures of my works already done.
Martine and Solveig gave me happy hours with something  unexpected... near or far, virtual or physically present, are friends that make beautiful my days.
Thanks for the flowers, the comment of encouragement, support, dear friends Bloggers and Facebook (or both): you make happier my life with your presence, daily.
Last unexpected friendship gift today ... just a nice article that introduces me as "the  Saturday painter" on Canelle Bretagne Blog, "Le Retour chez Canelle".

After finding how  quick inspiration shortens creation time, I painted these tulips yesterday afternoon, looking at my watercolor of 2010, enlarging size - RitaVaselli watercolor 20x28 inches
