CREATIVE THINKING / PENSIERI CREATIVI

Creative thoughts, walking around the hills on a summer afternoon

Concetto come soggetto

********
The world around me is an endless stream of things to look at .... and just  taking a look ,it creates reaction ... color and mood, words that make their way into the mind, a kaleidoscope of moments linked to images .

Taking pictures helps me to organize these visual sensations that flow continuously transforming these images into a real help to my painting.
The composition of the images is an exciting time of the preparation of my subject, and the criteria for displaying the image are not different between photograph and painting.
Doing this reflection I bought several books about the topic to deepen the composition (which is not only the golden section or the rule of thirds).

Movimento nella composizione

  • Motion in the composition

One of the most interesting books about image composition  is  "The photographer's mind", by Michael Freeman.
The book is divided into three chapters INTENT- STYLE-PROCESS
These three keywords are explored by Michael Freeman through the history of painting and photograph. Luckily for me, has been translated into Italian !!!
A sentence of Helmut Newton introduces the volume
"It 's all automatic. All I have to do is press the button. It's a camera that every amateur buys. [pause, points to his head] It's all in there"
The camera is the same for all ... The difference is in the  head.
For painters it is not so simple, is not just like to press a button... but there comes a time that we have before us the same things that have been in front of all the great painters .... even for us at that time the difference starts from what we have in the our head.

come suggerisce Michael Freeman
Compositional patterns ... keep my watercolors (and my photos)
as suggested by Michael Freeman
This head is unique to everyone and it is the true guarantee of our absolute ability to be / become creative and unique.
Michael Freeman suggests a method to store / study / memorize the favorite photographs believes that correspond to the most direct way for the photographer to take pictures ... I started to do the same thing with my watercolors to find out what I made in particular in the composition, to build on this foundation, more complex compositions, which correspond to the flow of my thoughts, now.

CARRYING WATERCOLORS / ACQUERELLI IN VIAGGIO

So I transport my watercolors securely: carriers, mats and trasnsparent folders

I miei acquerelli in passepartout autoportante (1)
Watercolors in self-supporting mat (1)

The beauty side  of being in Blogland is the circulation of ideas. The ideas are sometimes very simple, but for those new to a topic can be useful starting points.
I learned to keep my watercolors when I went to watercolor lesson by Maria Chiara Orlandini.
Plastic carriers, plastic trasparents folders  have entered into my life and now they   become ...a bit  invasive.

Così trasporto i miei acquerelli in modo sicuro.
So I transport my watercolors securely
They are everywhere at home, because various folders and various carriers also preserved the photographs of reference, the photographic enlargements and tracing papers  of  more complex drawings.
When Barbara Barbato wrote to me if it was appropriate  the fixative on watercolor paintings, gave me the idea to write a post on this topic.
Watercolors mounted on chassis without glass, have need of fixative and  varnish  coat protection  because they remain visible and exposed to possible damage.
The watercolors painted in the traditional way, are preserved, in my opinion, without fixative, embedded in an acid-free mat, even better if protected behind by another board, so  prepared  we can  transported and stored watercolors for a transitional period.

I miei acquerelli in passepartout autoportante (2)
Watercolors in self-supporting mat (2)
We must also pay attention to the plastic because it can create condensation unpleasant ...
A dry place, repaired  from sudden temperature changes, better preserved all the paintings not only watercolors.
I do not like to fix my works in watercolor, I prefer to paint in watercolor style on canvas and panel directly with acrylics.
So I have the opportunity to tell you what is working these summer days ... still experimenting my acrylics, watercolor style.

Step 1:  prime lavature - first washes

Step 2: ancora lavature su disegno dei dettagli - more washes on details drawing
********
How many little tricks I've learned in these years of painting.
Books, video lessons and meetings with teachers who provide their expertise to improve the technique of the students.

One of these little secrets of the workshop I received from Julie Gilbert Pollard.
Julie loves the vibrant colors and paints so very free of the schemes using acrylic for maximum dark in watercolor and the white casein for the highlights.

Step 3: caseina bianca per modellare i petali - white casein for building petals
I did not know of the existence of this possibility and find out  this color, in Voghera, has not been easy. My husband, in Turin to work, bought from a shop of fine arts the magic bottle.
The white casein did not help me cover the white areas as suggested by Julie Gilbert Pollard (the sparkling waters of a waterfall, in the demo ...) but to resume the white petals in flowers so complicated  as the peony.

The subject, my old picture of Mountain Peony, gift of Turin friends.

What happens between the casein and watercolor I thought it was soft and pleasant. Later I found out that Stephen Quiller mixes colors to casein with gouache, watercolor and acrylic, with surprising results.

Every time a little touch of white acrylic or a little touch of gouache can be used (the stamens of a flower for example) to give body to the details, I found this brilliant solution, and so the I propose to you.
I promised I would talk about what makes me in my studio life easier at a time that I'm experimenting and most intensively studying the aesthetics of my work.
Other posts on the "secrets" of the workshop are Rag-time, and Water-love.

Uva sulle colline a metà luglio 2014 - Grapes on the hills in mid-July 2014
It's hot, at least, Danilo is free from work  ... nothing is more beautiful to do everything with a gentle pace, go for a walk in the hills, grasp new ideas, which seem to mature as the grapes in the vineyards.

SUMMER AFTERNOON / POMERIGGIO D'ESTATE

Anemones painted from my own photo
RitaVaselli Watercolor on Fabriano 24x32cm

DAILY TWIRL / GIROTONDO QUOTIDIANO

"Daily Twirl"   -RitaVaselli Watercolor on Fabriano cardboard 50x70cm

Immaginazione gesto e segni grafici.

There is a building for  parking car, at Voghera, next to the railways station. ...
Every morning many people go to work, leaving their car and go up on the train or on the bus line .. to Milan, Pavia, Alessandria ... Every evening these people back in the car park, take up the car and go home.

Guido Colla- manipulated Polaroid
This building is weird ... ugly, maybe ...   However, until I saw the little polaroid manipulated by Guido Colla, I never thought to paint this car park ....

Every week I try to do a sketch on paper, painting direct... it's my gym watercolor,  while during the week  I follow other projects.

Detail of "graffiti"on cardboard while color is almost dry ,but not totally dry
Graffiti on paper, obtained with the nails,  completed this work that made me happy in a summer afternoon in my studio.

SIMPLE GESTURES / GESTI SEMPLICI

"Rendez-Vous"  RitaVaselli Watercolor Sketch on Fabriano Murillo cardboard  50cmx70cm

 2 -RitaVaselli Watercolor Sketch
I always have a book on my bedside table to combat insomnia.
I open the book and find inspiration, I read  few pages so I fall asleep.
Next, I try to put into practice the inspiration of the night.
This time the book is "Drawing on the Artist Within" by Betty Edwards.
The inspiration is ...graphic  signs communicate messages.
A line drawn with energy, a line drawn slowly, a line drawn in a deliberate way ... the viewer
at first sight  captures the differences of graphic signs and their  message.

3 -RitaVaselli Watercolor Sketch (FabrianoMurillo is a cardboard very textured, so I softened the whole sheet with spray bottle after this step)
I thought about working on a Polaroid, by courtesy of the Photographer Guido Colla, artist in Voghera, where I live.
I asked him  to use this image because it seemed to me so suggestive ...
After reading   the chapter about visual message, I painted  looking  at Polaroid textured while emulsion still wet.
No pencil  outlines ... I used dry brush stokes  working  with  lines, just pour & drip some  color, spray water to harmonize the whole  ...

 4 -RitaVaselli Watercolor Sketch
After this step  I softened  the whole sheet with spray bottle (demineralized) ,

See the final on top of page
Looking at the Polaroid manipulated from Guido, I used various gestures to get a visual message...   the image is almost self-generated, in total freedom of expression . I discovered a new power in simple gestures.
